Dr. Chappell has been faculty at the University of Wisconsin for 25 years; my methodological research is in the areas of designs for randomized clinical trials, Phase I clinical trials, non-inferiority trials, longitudinal and generalized linear models, and survival analysis. He collaborates extensively with investigators in the School of Medicine and Public Health with specializations in mental health, aging, radiation biology in cancer, and randomized clinical trials. In addition to these collaborations and work with the FDA and Society for Clinical Trials, Dr. Chappell has been a member of approximately 25 DSMBs for the NIH, VA, and industry and many clinical trial steering and supervisory committees. He is a past-president of the Society for Clinical Trials and, for ten years, have taught trial methodology to young clinical researchers for the American Society for Clinical Oncology and the American Association for Cancer Research.
He is particularly interested in statistical methods in radiobiological modeling and cancer clinical trials. This is reflected by my continued collaboration with an international array of radiation biologistics and oncologists (see Section C.3. below) on appropriate dose, time, and fractionation schedules in cancers of the head & neck, prostate, lung, and cervix. In many cases, these collaborations have progressed from theory to clinical trials. His work in cancer clinical trials has been recognized by Fellowship in the Society for Clinical Trials, a decade of teaching in the ASCO/AACR Vail workshop on cancer clinical trials, and service on many DSMBs and FDA advisory boards. He has worked directly with Dr. Harari on many projects over the years and my experience positions me well to serve as Co-Director of the Stats Core for the Wisconsin HN SPORE.
